THE TOURNAMENT Trail
WBS CHAMP PAYS PESOS, RUBS BUDDHA RIGHT WAY...
December 1-2-, Nuevo Vallarta 2002. México. Bruce Bosley of yakima, Washington, caught five sailfish aboard the High Maintenance on the World Billfish Championship´s Final day and came from behind to Win.
He edged out defending champ Bobby sauls of Raleigh, North Carolina, Who finished with 1.300 points aboard the Anticipation. Bosley caught four Sailfish on
30 –pound test and two on 50 pound for a total of 1.650 points. Because Sauls had jumped to a commanding lead the first day with 1.000 points, Bosley and his team decided to fish farther out -40 miles to the outer Bank and use lighter tackle the second day. Tournament rules award extra points for lighter tackle and dead Bait.
Trolling dead mullet, Capt Steve Torres put Bosley on five Sails the second day, enough to overtake sauls, who caught just one.
“We were a little aprehensive about light tackle because we didn´t have that much experience with it, “Bosley said.: But he went 6-for-6 with sails during the tournament, and said he would use light tackle more often in the future to accumulate points in tournaments that encourage light gear.
Anglers and crew thru pesos over the side the second day and found they usually got a strike within a half-hour of salting the ocean with Mexican money. To improve their fortunes, they also rubbed the ample belly of an observer nicknamed “Buddha”.
Some 15 Boats representing different divisions competed in the championships. The teams caught and released a total of 26 pacific sailfish and two Blue Marlin.
